Data Center Capacity Planning

I was fortunate enough to spend several years working in a data rich environment of a super-large scale compute asset intensive Web retail company. During that time I came to understand that planning for compute capacity growth revolved around understanding several key data sets:

  1. What assets were being consumed.
  2. The difference between active, reactive and passive assets.
  3. Technology impact on assets (Moore’s law, Butter’s law, Kryder’s law , etc)
  4. What is being produced.

Armed with historical and trend supporting data, I was able to produce information and actionable knowledge for Data Center Capacity Planning.  World Wide planning was provided for > 100,000 host instances and 30% growth rates.

  1. Hello Paula,
I worked you during the contest (12/07/14) and you were loud in California with your “1” call and with a “5nnOR”. So I looked you up and was I surprised!! What a QRZ page… Very impressive and I bookmarked it to read and review at a later time.

I got my ticket at ham ticket at the age of 11 in 1964 and have been on the air everyday, plus I op CW mobile from my work truck.

Thanks for the great info and I hope to hear you on the air someday…
    Mike/W6YDE
